The big deal about small employers

Last week, ADP data showed that employers with fewer than 50 workers shed a large number of jobs—13,000—in May. While one month doesn’t make a trend, it does remind us of the big role small employers play in our economy. So, when it comes to the macroeconomy, what’s the big deal with small employers? Here are three reasons small businesses have an outsized impact on the U.S. labor market.

Employee sentiment index hit record high in May

The ADP Research Employee Motivation and Commitment Index, which tracks how people think and feel about their jobs, rose three points to a record high in May.

The Employee Motivation and Commitment Index fell slightly in March, dropping two points to 127.

The EMC Index, which tracks how people think and feel about their jobs, fell slightly in March. Only three of the 10 sectors we track showed strength.

The EMC Index, which tracks how people think and feel about their jobs, lost five points in January, but remains near historic highs set in the second half of 2024.
